In an effort to confront one of the most pressing health challenges of our time, the European Union has launched an ambitious initiative known as the EU Cancer Mission. This critical component of the Horizon Europe research and innovation programme (2021-2027) aims to significantly improve the lives of millions by 2030, tackling cancer through a multi-faceted approach that encompasses research, innovation, and comprehensive stakeholder engagement.

The health teams at Spinverse, led by Rohit Sood and Jayden Khakurel, have had a busy spring with several clients whilst concepting and preparing various innovative and complex project proposals for the calls falling under Horizon Europe programmes in clusters 1 and 4. When successful, the impact of these projects will be life-changing to many people suffering from serious illnesses or mental issues. What is more, the proposed projects aim to enhance European healthcare research infrastructure (RI) and a more secure use of sensitive patient data.

The integration of digital technology into healthcare has presented a multitude of challenges, with cybersecurity emerging as a major concern. The consequences of cyber threats extend beyond financial implications, posing a significant risk to the integrity of healthcare systems. Key vulnerabilities within the healthcare sector, including endpoint leakage, user authentication deficiencies, and excessive user permissions, persist as critical areas susceptible to compromise. In the worst case, these vulnerabilities pose a threat to patients' wellbeing. Collaboration in EU consortia may be the answer to tackle the challenges. 

“Transforming Healthcare by bringing together diverse sectors” is the key challenge that the Innovative Health Initiative (IHI) aims to address to build a strong society. Digital technologies in mental health care, advanced therapies for rare diseases, and improving hospital care are among the topics underlined in for IHI’s forthcoming calls in 2023. As the healthcare systems are under more pressure than ever and many diseases still lack effective treatments, there is an urgent need for more innovative and integrated approaches.
