The EU LIFE 2026 provides funding for environmental and climate actions

Written by Spinverse | Apr 8, 2026 5:48:26 AM

The LIFE programme is the European Union’s dedicated funding instrument for environmental protection, climate action and clean energy transition, contributing to the objectives of the European Green Deal.  With the 2026 call expected to open on 21 April, LIFE provides grants for implementing best practices and developing, demonstrating and promoting innovating techniques to fight climate change, biodiversity loss and protect our environment. Spinverse can offer expertise in how your project could be fitted to the LIFE programmes leading to significant environmental and climate impacts.

Successful LIFE actions are all about real environmental and climate impact, sustainability, replicability and transferability

Measurable impacts of actions are key to a successful funding proposal. In addition to reducing GHG emissions and other critical environmental impacts (such as circularity, resource efficiency, chemical pollution, biodiversity decline, water management), successful projects also provide substantial socio-economic impacts, such as job creation and new European value chains. The actions can make a significant technological impact, introduce new kinds of expertise or practices, ways of operation, operational models in tackling environmental and climate challenges and also impacting the relevant policies and regulations.

Four sub-programmes each covering a wide range of topics

  • Nature and biodiversity
  • Circular economy and quality of life
  • Climate change mitigation and adaptation
  • Clean energy transition.

LIFE funds projects that turn policy objectives into action. Projects are evaluated based on environmental or climate impact, credibility, scalability and long‑term sustainability.

Nature and biodiversity
Projects safeguarding habitats and species, restoring ecosystems, implementing the Birds and Habitats Directives, tackling invasive alien species and supporting the EU Biodiversity Strategy, including Natura 2000.

Circular economy and quality of life
Solutions advancing circular economy, waste prevention and resource efficiency, recovery of materials from waste, and zero‑pollution actions addressing air, water, soil, chemicals, noise and industrial emissions.

Climate change mitigation and adaptation
Innovative solutions reducing greenhouse gas emissions and increasing climate resilience, including nature‑based solutions, clean transport, land and sea management, carbon removal, health impactsand adaptation of buildings and infrastructure.

Clean energy transition
Actions accelerating energy efficiency, renewable energy uptake, skills development, citizen engagement, policy frameworks and investment project development supporting Europe’s clean energy transition.

Sustainability – long-term actions and end results

In LIFE terminology, ‘Sustainability’ refers to the long-term nature of funded actions and their end results: how can the outcomes of the action be maintained after the project has been completed? At the same time, the project must include concrete measures during and after the project for replication and transfer of the outcomes to new regions, countries or sectors.

Spinverse has supported several clients in preparing their winning funding applications. Related to environmental and climate impacts, Spinverse has expertise in identifying and quantifying the most relevant positive impacts that the project can provide in the participating countries and beyond. We also help the clients in setting up a feasible set of indicators to follow during the project to prove the realisation and upscaling of the impacts.
