Spinverse to manage new 80M€ breakthrough materials programs for FIMECC

FIMECC has launched two new research programs that will have a major impact in bringing innovative and sustainable materials solutions for many emerging and growing industry sectors. The programs will also enable a major renewal in the Finnish metals and engineering cluster. Spinverse facilitated the preparation of these novel industry driven public-private partnership (PPP) programs and has now been selected to manage both of them.

The two new programs are Breakthrough Steels and Applications (FIMECC BSA) and Hybrid Materials (FIMECC HYBRIDS). The total volume of these two 5-year programs is altogether 80M€. The two consortia include over 60 companies and leading Finnish universities and research institutes, and their networks are further extended by top-notch international partners. These wide competence networks gather together multi-disciplinary expert groups from different industries and academic branches, including different value-chain players and end-users from various application sectors.

“The goals of the programs are ambitious. They combine spearhead science and real critical industrial needs to enable innovative and sustainable materials solutions and relevant competence for the industry”, says Dr Markku Heino from Spinverse, Program Manager, FIMECC BSA & HYBRIDS.

One key element in making this happen is a cross-cutting knowledge platform that will enable the development and efficient utilization of multiscale modelling. This “Fundamentals and modelling (FUNMODE)” platform crosscuts through the industry-oriented projects in each program and also links the two programs together. The joint FUNMODE project includes a so-called “FIMECC Breakthrough Materials Doctoral School” which will educate over 20 new multi-skilled doctors through the program work.

Key emphasis of the FIMECC BSA program is on end-users in selected business areas: bioenergy, power generation, mining, lifting, handling and transport, offshore and marine, waste recycling, arctic technologies and processing industry. The program is built around the entire steel value chain and it aims at 1) optimizing life-cycle efficiency and sustainability of steel-based solutions by removing barriers to the efficient application of latest developments, 2) developing a completely new generation of steel and cast material concepts from both economic and environmental point of view, as well as 3) building world-class competence and digital tools for the design of next decade’s products.

FIMECC HYBRIDS focuses on significantly increasing the competitiveness of Finnish companies in the field of knowledge-intensive, value-added materials which show huge commercial potential. Many industrial applications require property combinations that cannot be achieved by conventional materials. The program will create knowledge on how to combine and use common engineering materials in an innovative way, to improve their combined properties in several selected application areas and to reduce the time to market and life cycle costs of the new hybrid material solutions. The participating companies form a wide value network representing the materials, manufacturing/processing and application sectors.

FIMECC Ltd. (Finnish Metals and Engineering Competence Cluster) is an open innovation R&D company. The aim of FIMECC is to increase and deepen the cooperation between companies, universities and research institutes in R&D. The FIMECC research programs function with a public-private-partnership model to enable co-creation of knowledge through strategic pre-competitive research. Companies contribute approximately half of the funding and the other half is funded by Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Innovation.

Spinverse Ltd is a leader in technology consulting, specialized in commercialising emerging technologies. We take technology further and offer innovative and tailor-made solutions to our clients, e.g. in the chemicals, energy, electronics, life-science or forest industry.
