The Social and Health Services Reform will require many reformations in a short time frame. Although the project requires painful cuts and weakened levels of service, it brings with it a vast potential to create new innovations in the fields of service modeling and health technology. The current system is heading for a crisis, yet a crisis can facilitate the required decision-making.

Money saved by the reform, ought to be steered towards innovative technology acquisitions and the development of novel private services. The innovative small and medium sized enterprises, (SMEs), should have their own procurement quota set aside as has already been done in the U.K.

The health-technology cluster in Finland has been generated by the cooperation of quality medical-care providers and engineers. This cooperation has a long history, the best companies have since shifted to foreign ownership, e.g. Instru to GE Healthcare and the spinoff Neuromag, from the Helsinki University of Technology, to the Swedish Elekta. Foreign ownership has benefited both companies, the Finnish units have grown stronger as a result of these transactions.

The global head of GE patient-monitoring, Didier Deltort, is currently setting up a start-up accelerator next to the company headquarters. This new start-up accelerator will provide Finnish companies a path for growth starting from sensor producers all the way to algorithm developers. It will create a network connecting GE with Finnish research and also open new possibilities for funding. Would a similar investment suit Niklas Savander, the new CEO of Elekta?

The Social and Health Services Reform promises to shift the focus of healthcare towards preemptive services. This should equally provide new possibilities for old hands like Polar and Suunto, as well as new entrepreneurs like PulseOne, Omegawave and numerous other companies.

The most economical way to take care of a patient is to prevent the patient from getting sick in the first place. Sitra has done good groundwork in this area. Wide-scale access to medical records would be a huge opportunity. Finland should act as a forerunner in order to enable a new ecosystem for software development in this field. Medical records belong to the patient, who decides how it is accessed. This means that the care providing unit should not be allowed to impede the sharing of this information.

HUS, (The Hospital District of Helsinki and Uusimaa), has acted as a trailblazer in utilizing new technologies and developing services. The Innovation-Mill program has generated over 20 new companies, that work in the health-technology field. Imagine the potential HUS could have for even internationally competitive spin-offs.

Progress should not remain only in the metropolitan area. The Oulu region has a tremendous opportunity to renew the Oulu miracle in the health-technology field.

The Northern Osthrobotnia Hospital District’s 500 million Euro finance package for the “Future Hospital” makes long-term innovation possible. As long as the decision-makers in Oulu make sure, that the funding does not all go towards fixing real-estate.

Sote-uudistuksesta innovaatioveturi!

Sote-uudistus tulee vaatimaan paljon uudistuksia lyhyessä ajassa. Vaikka projekti edellyttää kipeitä leikkauksia ja heikentää palveluja, sillä on oikein hoidettuna valtava potentiaali luoda Suomeen uusia innovaatioita uusista palvelumalleista terveysteknologiaan. Nykyjärjestelmä on ajautumassa kriisiin, mutta kriisissä on helpompi tehdä tarvittavat päätökset.

Uudistuksessa säästyviä rahoja pitää ohjata innovatiivisiin teknologiahankintoihin ja uusien yksityisten palvelujen kehittämiseen. Innovatiivisille pk-yrityksille tulee varata oma ostokiintiönsä kuten Englannissa on jo toimittu.

Suomen terveysteknologiaklusteri on syntynyt laadukkaan sairaanhoidon ja insinöörityön yhteistyönä.  Historia on pitkä ja  parhaat yritykset ovat siirtyneet ulkomaiseen omistukseen, kuten Instru amerikkalaiselle GE Healthcarelle ja TKK-spinoff Neuromag ruotsalaiselle Elektalle. Ulkomainen omistus on ollut molemmille hyväksi ja Suomen yksiköt ovat vahvistuneet kauppojen tuloksena.

GE:n potilasmonitoroinnin globaali vetäjä Didier Deltortkiihdyttämöä, joka tarjoaa kasvupolun suomalaisyrityksille anturivalmistajista algoritmien kehittäjiin, verkottaa GE:n suomalaiseen tutkimukseen ja avaa uusia rahoitusmahdollisuuksia. Sopisikohan Elektan tuoreelle toimitusjohtajalle Niklas Savanderille samanlainen investointi?
Sote-uudistus lupaa siirtää hoidon painopistettä ennalta ehkäiseviin palveluihin. Tämän pitäisi avata uusia mahdollisuuksia niin vanhoille konkareille Polarille ja Suunnolle kuin uusille yrittäjille kuten PulseOnille, Omegawavelle ja lukuisille muille.

Potilas on halvinta hoitaa estämällä sairastuminen. Sitra on tehnyt tälle alueelle hyvää pohjatyötä. Potilastiedon laaja avaaminen olisi valtava mahdollisuus. Suomen tulisi toimia edelläkävijänä, ja näin mahdollistaa uusi ekosysteemi alan ohjelmistokehitykselle.  Potilastiedon tulee kuulua potilaalle, joka itse päättää sen käytöstä. Tämä tarkoittaa myös sitä että hoitavan yksikön ei saa antaa jarruttaa tietojen jakoa.

HUS on toiminut Suomessa tiennäyttäjänä uuden teknologian hyödyntäjänä ja palvelujen kehittäjänä. Innovation Mill -ohjelma on tuottanut yli 20 uutta terveysteknologian yritystä Suomeen. Minkälainen potentiaali vaikka HUSissa olisi kansainvälisestikin kilpailukykyisille spin-offeille?

Kehitys ei saa jäädä vain pääkaupunkiseudulle. Oulun seudulla on mahtava mahdollisuus uusia Oulun ihme terveysteknologian alueella.

Pohjois-Pohjanmaan sairaanhoitopiirin suunnittelema 500 miljoonan euron rahoituspaketti ”Tulevaisuuden sairaalaa” varten mahdollistaa myös innovaatiot pidemmällä aikajänteellä, kunhan oululaiset varmistavat, että kaikki rahat eivät mene kiinteistöjen korjauksiin.
