Industrial Internet brings corporations and SMEs together

To many people the terms ”Industrial Internet” and the “Internet of Things” still sound much like concepts from sci-fi literature or, at the very least, like future hype. What exactly do these terms mean?

The internet has already connected people with one another and with knowledge. The Internet of Things will do the same among devices. The Industrial Internet, on the other hand, will connect entire industries bringing along more intelligent devices, machine learning and the capacity to analyse large quantities of information. Simultaneously it will create clear mutual rules among the different industries.

Companies from any industry can join the Industrial Internet. The most typical examples of the modern scope of the Internet of Things can be found in health diagnostics. Wrist bands are capable of send health information straight to centralised health systems. Another fine example is the automated condition assessment of industrial machinery. Kone elevators monitor their functions, information is sent in real time to enable proactive maintenance.

A product of the Industrial Internet can be based on an entirely novel way of thinking. As an example, Enevo has created a system, which monitors the levels of waste in trash containers, and thus optimises the logistics of waste disposal. Enevo’s service, which is offered to companies in the waste disposal industry, has been made possible by sensors and the systems which monitor them.

It is quite possible to enter the Industrial Internet market with ideas of all kinds of sizes. The growth potential can well be compared to that of the gaming industry. With a good idea and well planned marketing, moving forward is possible with small investments. In corporations, the Industrial Internet enables large scale renewal and the upheaval of the entire logic of the industry.

The shift of devices into the internet adds the demand of more intelligent sensors and components, furthermore, the needs will grow in the fields of GPS, computational algorithms, analysing and data storage.

The more intelligent devices join the internet, the more new questions requiring answers will follow. The most torrid ones have to do with matters of information security and user safety of the devices. Standardisation and protocols, which resolve these issues, will create a base for future competition. Global markets will be open for those who are among the first to resolve these issues.

All this provides vast possibilities for small agile companies to solve problems, which encompass an entire industry. The true benefit from resolving these issues unfolds for the large corporations, therefore, cooperation with small companies can be rewarding.

Public funding supports cooperation strongly. TEKES has launched programmes worth hundreds of millions in order to expedite the Industrial Internet, 5G-telecommunications and digital healthcare. Also a special search to enable the cooperation between small and large companies has been launched by TEKES. The EU Horizon2020-programme offers multiple, Europe-wide resources.

Go to the Industrial Internet, your competitors are there already!

Teollinen internet yhdistää suuret ja pienet yritykset

Kauppalehden kolumni: Pekka Koponen, 15.12.2014, B16

Sanaparit ”teollinen internet” ja ”esineiden internet” kuulostavat yhä monen korvaan sci-fi-kirjallisuudelta, tai vähintäänkin tulevaisuuden hypeltä. Mitä niillä oikeastaan tarkoitetaan?

Internet on jo yhdistänyt ihmiset tietoon ja toisiinsa. Esineiden internet tekee saman laitteille.

Horizon2020-ohjelma tarjoaa moninkertaiset, Euroopan laajuiset resurssit.

Mene nopeasti teolliseen internetiin, kilpailijasi ovat jo siellä!
