Get ready for the 2026 Circular Bio-based Europe (CBE JU) funding call

Written by Spinverse | Jan 29, 2026 11:21:13 AM

The Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) has announced its 2026 call for project proposals, offering a significant opportunity for innovative organisations in the bioeconomy sector. The call opens for submissions on 23 April 2026 and will close on 22 September 2026. With a substantial budget of €170.7 million, the call aims to support ambitious projects that foster sustainability and competitiveness in bio-based industries. Spinverse experts in bioeconomy are here to help if you need support with your project proposal.

The 2026 call features a broad range of opportunities across the bioeconomy; examples include boosting the competitiveness of biorefineries through biotechnology, developing safe‑and‑sustainable‑by‑design bio‑based solutions for agriculture, home and personal care, and strengthening Europe’s resilience with new bio‑based nutritional ingredients. Additional topics address circular packaging materials, valorisation of residual biomass and breakthrough sustainable textile fibres.

Opportunities for innovative bioeconomy projects

The CBE JU funds four types of actions:

  • Flagship Innovation Actions (IA-Flag) deploy a first-of-its-kind innovation on the European market. Flagships include a flagship plant investment typically by the coordinator. Rest of the consortium covers relevant partners along the value chain.
  • Innovation Actions (IAs) scale up activities from prototype to product validation / demonstration and market replication.
  • Research and Innovation Actions (RIAs) establish new knowledge or explore the feasibility of a new or improved technology, product, process, service or solution. These may include basic and applied research, technology development and integration, testing, demonstration and validation on a small-scale prototype in a laboratory or simulated environment.
  • Coordination and Support Actions (CSAs): among others, structure stakeholder communities, support technological visions and outreach, as well as disseminate and exploit research results.
