PILLARS, CLUSTERS, MISSIONS AND DESTINATIONS

Horizon Europe is huge. No wonder it needs to be divided into reasonably large pieces. The largest division is the pillars. These are three and are divided according to how close the project results are expected to be taken into use and have impact on society. The first is called Excellent Science and focuses on the earliest phases of the innovation process. In the third pillar, Innovative Europe, we find projects with results and technologies very close to market launch.

GLOBAL CHALLENGES & EUROPEAN INDUSTRIAL COMPETITIVENESS

The second pillar’s budget makes up more than half of the entire program, and is called Global Challenges & European Industrial Competitiveness. It is further divided into Clusters, Missions and Destinations, focusing on the subject area and the EU’s objectives with the calls.

The pillar includes the following clusters:

  • Health
  • Culture, creativity and inclusive societies
  • Civil security for society
  • Digital, industry and space
  • Climate, energy and mobility
  • Food, bioeconomy, natural resources, agriculture and environment

Each Cluster contains a number of calls that are open during the application period. Closed, open and forthcoming announcements can be searched in the EU portal. It is important to keep track of what is out there at the moment and what is coming soon so that you do not miss the perfect call.

MISSIONS

In addition to the calls in clusters 1-6, there are also Missions. These are a collection of cross-disciplinary activities that should be bold and inspirational with measurable goals. The aim is for the results to have an impact on society with relevance to a significant part of Europe’s population and a wide range of Europe’s citizens.

Missions are as follows:

  • Adaptation to climate change, including societal transformation
  • Cancer
  • Soil health and food
  • Climate-neutral and smart cities
  • Healthy oceans, seas, coastal, and inland waters

Calls within Global Challenges & European Industrial Competitiveness are sought by consortia where one player is the coordinator and the others participate as partners. Participation is open to all types of actors, universities, public actors, private companies, NGOs and more.
