Patria Land is leading a defence industry consortium that has now been selected as part of the European Defence Industrial Development Programme (EDIDP), an industrial programme of the EU. As part of the EDIDP, the program focuses on Ground Combat Capabilities (GCC) to develop the next generation armoured platforms and upgrade the current ones. Patria Land acts as the industrial coordinator of the EDIDP-GCC-2020 and has formed a consortium called FAMOUS (European Future Highly Mobile Augmented Armoured Systems) to execute the program. The consortium includes 19 leading European defence companies from different countries. Spinverse supported the planning and preparation of the winning FAMOUS project proposal and will help Patria Land to coordinate the project.
EDIDP is a defence industry development program designed to support the competitiveness and innovation capacity of the Union's defence industry. The EDIDP is the first EU-funded program to develop defence capabilities, with a financial envelope of 500 million euros. The selection for the EDIDP program was made in June 2021 and the actual start of the project will take place in autumn 2021. The GCC project led by Patria will last 24 months.
"Our Defence and Security team is proud to be part of the consortium that develops the future armoured vehicle platforms for Europe. It has been a pleasure to work with these innovative and target-oriented companies that want to develop something truly novel in this area," says Anu Ilmonen, Senior Manager and Team Leader for the Defence and Security team from Spinverse.
Developing future armoured vehicle platforms and modernising current ones
The FAMOUS project aims to develop future technologies and performances that enhance ground combat capabilities in the areas of mobility, hybrid operation, power generation and energy storage, as well as security systems, situational awareness, robotics, C4I solutions, weapons systems, and modern lifecycle support solutions. Patria Land is the consortium coordinator by leading and coordinating the FAMOUS project. All 19 companies, including ground combat system integrators as well as high-tech Mid-Cap and SME companies, will bring highly complementary expertise, technologies, and know-how to the project. A comprehensive combination of land system capabilities will increase mobility on land in a common operating environment.
The development program is more than just a program focused on platform development. It is a unique and innovative approach to developing areas of next-generation technology that can be utilized in a variety of armoured vehicles and systems of these vehicles. These concepts can be implemented in future system architectures and utilized in future European armoured vehicle systems. This approach will lead to unity and thus increase coherence, standardization and compatibility between different platforms in the EU.
