Opportunities for decarbonizing transport: The Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility Call

The European Union is advancing its commitment to sustainable transportation by allocating EUR 1 billion to the Alternative Fuels Infrastructure Facility (AFIF) for 2024-2025. This funding will enhance the development of electric and hydrogen fueling infrastructure across the Trans-European Transport Network (TEN-T), supporting the EU's ambitious decarbonization goals outlined in the new alternative fuels regulation and the ReFuelEU and FuelEU maritime initiatives.

Eligible projects for AFIF funding

The latest call for proposals under AFIF covers a variety of projects that support the proliferation of alternative fuels infrastructure in road, maritime, inland waterway, and air transport. Notably, this call extends beyond the establishment of high-power electricity recharging stations and hydrogen refuelling stations. Newly introduced funding opportunities include:

  • Deployment of Megawatt recharging stations catering to Heavy Duty Vehicles.
  • Enhancement of electricity and hydrogen supply facilities at airports.
  • Development of electricity supply, as well as ammonia and methanol bunkering facilities at ports.

To qualify for AFIF support, projects must be mature investment endeavors with a financing approval letter from an Implementing Partner or a public or private financial institution based in the EU.

Application process and cut-off dates

The implementation of AFIF will occur through a rolling call for proposals, giving applicants the flexibility to submit their proposals at three distinct cut-off dates until the end of 2025:

  • First cut-off: 24 September 2024 at 17.00 (CET)
  • Second cut-off: 11 June 2025 at 17.00 (CET)
  • Final cut-off: 17 December 2025 at 17.00 (CET)
