Floating recycling centre in Gothenburg

In autumn 2019, Gothenburg will receive a floating recycling centre. The barge with containers will moor up at five quays between the Älvsborgsbron and Götaälvbron bridges. The aim is to make the city more car-free and unburden other recycling centres in the city. 

From early September, people living close to the Göta älv river can dispose of their recycling without needing to drive the car to the tip. A barge will moor up at quays in the city and, generally speaking, accept everything that a normal recycling centre accepts.

"Above all, we think that it will be the residents living by the river who will leave their recycling on the barge, but, of course, it is open for everybody living in Gothenburg," says Peter Årnes, Waste Strategist at the Recycling and Water Office, Gothenburg City.

From test to a functioning solution

The trial with the floating recycling centre is part of the project DenCity where solutions for sustainable passenger and goods transport are being developed and tested. In the project, IMCG, by communication efforts and strategic exchange with other urban development projects, will act to ensure that DenCity's solutions can go from pilot tests to implementation in more locations.

"Water is underutilised as a means of transport, which means that investigating the possibilities presented by water routes is exciting. Since many communities are located along coastlines and waterways, this is an important parameter when increasingly denser populated neighbourhoods are being planned and developed," says Anna-Karin Dahlin, Head of Communications at IMCG and active in the work with DenCity.

Here are the quays

The barge will moor up at five quays: Eriksbergstorget, Sannegårdshamnen, Amerikaskjulet (in Majorna), Rosenlund and Stenpiren. Information about the exact times the barge will be moored up at each quay, will be available from the beginning of September 2019 here.

DenCity is a collaborative project between 26 operators that is led by CLOSER at the Lindholmen Science Park. In the project, new technology and new transport solutions are developed, tested and implemented, which will contribute to the building of smarter cities that are attractive to live and move in – even when the areas and quarters become more built up.

The project includes, apart from CLOSER at the Lindholmen Science Park and IMCG: Gothenburg City, The Swedish Transport Administration, Chalmers, Ericsson, Jernhusen, Riksbyggen and Schenker, among others.
