What are the EIC Pathfinder Challenges?
EIC Pathfinder Challenges are part of the Horizon Europe programme and support visionary, science-driven research towards radically new technologies. Each year, the European Commission identifies specific thematic challenges that address strategic priorities for Europe’s future competitiveness, sustainability and societal well-being. The Pathfinder Challenges encourage collaborative projects that bring together diverse teams from academia, industry, SMEs and start-ups.
Budget for this call
The total indicative budget for this call is €96 million, which is expected to be allocated in approximately equal shares across the Challenges. The funding rate of this grant will be 100% of the eligible costs. In addition to funding, successful applicants will receive tailor-made access to a wide range of business acceleration services and interactions with EIC programme managers and other actions in the portfolio of projects selected to help them with the protection and exploitation of the results of the project.
EIC Pathfinder Challenges 2026: Key focus areas
The 2026 EIC Pathfinder Challenges focus on important and innovative areas in science and technology. You can find the detailed topics on the EIC Pathfinder Challenges 2026 portal, but here are the main ones for this year:
- Advanced materials for miniaturised energy harvesting systems
- Biotechnology for healthy ageing
- An innovative preventative or therapeutic biotechnology-based or pharmaceutical intervention
- A biomarker-based tool to enable the responsible deployment of ageing-related interventions
- A new approach methodology (NAM) that goes beyond the current state of the art to enable the future development of interventions for healthy ageing.
- DeepRAP: Deep reasoning, abstraction & planning towards trustworthy cognitive AI systems
Each Challenge comes with its own scope, objectives and expected outcomes. It is designed to advance research from proof-of-concept towards technology validation and beyond. With each specific Challenge, a portfolio of projects will be established that explore different perspectives, competing approaches or complementary aspects of the Challenge. The complexity and high-risk nature of this research will require multidisciplinary collaboration.
