CBE JU projects need to consider environmental sustainability in a holistic way
The Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU) is a public-private collaboration that invests in projects deploying competitive, sustainable, and circular bio-based industries in Europe. It aims at accelerating the innovation process and development of bio-based innovative solutions, while supporting EU’s zero-pollution ambition, climate neutrality target, and the restoration of biodiversity. Spinverse funding expertise includes strong understanding on sustainability methodologies in Life-cycle Assessment (LCA) and Life-Cycle Sustainability Assessment (LCSA).

Grouped based on the technology readiness level (TRL), the actions include:
- Research and innovation actions (RIA) focusing on development
and validation of novel technologies - Innovation Actions (IA) focusing on scaling up and demonstrating of novel technologies
- Innovation Action – Flagships (IA-Flag) focusing on setting up large-scale first-of-its-kind product facilities in Europe.
The projects applying for funding need to ensure a high level of environmental performance of the developed and demonstrated bio-based industrial systems. In the proposal preparation phase this includes:
- Ensuring that the used biobased feedstocks follow the ‘food first’ and ‘cascading use’ principles,
- Identifying the environmentally critical issues related to the project activities and describing how the project will steer the development process in the right direction,
Assessment of the environmental sustainability and circularity of all the products and processes
In addition, during the project execution, a comprehensive assessment of the environmental sustainability and circularity of all the products and processes developed in the project needs to be performed as part of the safety and sustainability assessment according to the Safe and sustainable by design (SSbD) framework. This is usually done using the life-cycle assessment (LCA) and life-cycle-sustainability assessment (LCSA) methodologies. The safety and sustainability assessment also includes the evaluation of chemical hazards and human health and safety impacts during the production and use of the chemicals and materials developed in the project.
Over the years, Spinverse has prepared numerous successful CBE project proposals and achieved success in all call types (flagship, innovation action, research and innovation action). Spinverse has expertise in identifying the most relevant environmental impacts of the project’s value chain and outlining the descriptions needed in the different parts of the proposal. We can also connect the consortium with a suitable partner to perform the environmental sustainability assessment.
