Accelerating sustainable development in Finland's mineral sector

Tekes has launched a new development programme, Green Mining, aiming to further accelerate the mineral sector's development in Finland. The vision of the programme is ambitious: In 2020, Finland will have a globally leading eco-efficient mining industry. The programme budget is close to 60 m€, of which 45 m€ is enterprise funding and rest research funding. The programme is scheduled to run from 2011 to 2016.

Realizing this vision will necessitate internationally networked R&D projects utilizing the top class human resources in Finland and worldwide. One of the main aims is to activate and promote the development and internationalization of SME's in the sector. Finland must also defend it's position as a world leader in the mining machinery industry. There is also a growing need to develop a service industry in this sector.

The turnover of the mining sector in Finland has increased dramatically since the low point of the 1990's and early 2000. The sector is expected to employ more than 5000 people within two years in Finnish mines, increasing to 12 000 when the mining machinery industry and service companies are included. Modern mining is based on high technology and sustainable development. However, more research and development is needed.  The purpose of Green Mining Programme is to activate and accelerate this development.

“Finland has good mineral potential and is ranked as a so called ‘low risk’ country. Our infrastructure is excellent, legislation and licensing policy are predictable and open” says programme coordinator Harry Sandström from Spinverse. Additionally Finnish know how especially in the fields of geological data management and delivery, mineral processing technology and mining machinery development is at a very high level in global terms. This means Finland’s prospects are very healthy. However, without the input of international mining companies and venture capital funding, progress in this sector would have been slower.  By continuing to improve our international and domestic networking we can create an open and innovative atmosphere in the sector. For this, the new programme is a good instrument”.

“Spinverse is excited about this opportunity. The mining sector is one of the greatest opportunities to ensure the future prosperity of Finland. Success requires very focused innovation processes, global technology scouting, joint research and agile growth-oriented companies co-operating with established global leaders.”, says Pekka Koponen, Spinverse CEO.
