Horizon 2020 funding in 2016 – new Work Programme drafts published

The Horizon 2020 Work Programme for 2016-2017 has been published with over 1000 different funding opportunities for R&D&I, demonstrations, piloting and new market entry in very many different areas. This is the time to start looking for funding opportunities for you if you haven't done so already.

The first deadlines  are already in December 2015, less than three months away, with the calls opening in October. These are two-staged calls that include, for instance, the pilot line calls in the area of nanotechnologies, advanced materials and manufacturing. The first stage is a short 10-page project outline, and only projects passing the first stage will be invited to submit a full project proposal during the spring 2016.

Overall the Horizon 2020 Work Programmes for 2016-2017 have a wide range of themes. Including for example the

• ICT Work Programme, where 38 calls have their deadlines in the first half of 2016, with topics such as the “Games and gamification” (ICT-24, DL Apr 2016).
• Cross Cutting activities, like the pilot lines for materials with customised thermal or electrical properties and nanostructured antimicrobial surfaces (PILOTS-01 and PILOTS-02, deadline for 1st stage Dec 2015 and 2nd stage May 2016).
• IoT is present in both the ICT and Cross-cutting activities Work Programmes (FoF and IoT calls).
• Nanotechnologies, Advanced Materials, Biotechnology and Advanced Manufacturing and Processing, calls for 2016 include topics ranging from wide bandgap semiconductors for power electronics (NMBP-02) to affordable weight reduction of high-volume vehicles (NMPB-08) and nanoformulation of biologicals (NMPB-10). All of these NMPB calls mentioned are two-stage, with first deadline in Dec 2015.
• The Renewable Energy theme is present in several call topics ranging from Materials research to Large-scale pilots

The draft calls that have been published are expected to be close to final, although the European Commission does warn that the Work Programme published now is not yet endorsed and has no legal value. The final Work Programme is expected to become public in October.
